Understanding the importance of gynecology care in Katy, TX

Importance of Gynecology in Houston Area

Dr. Taryll Jenkins of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine understands that visits to his office aren’t typically on a woman’s list of favorite activities. In fact, many women avoid them completely. They may think they don’t need to go if they’re not sexually active or having problems with their periods or reproductive areas of the body. However, annual gynecology checkups are critical to ensuring the health of women.

Here, Dr. Jenkins provides several reasons why women should schedule an appointment:

  1. You’re 15 years of age, or older. It is recommended that women begin a schedule of annual gynecology appointments between the ages of 13 and 15. Starting with annual appointments at this age helps young women understand the importance of the appointments and feel more comfortable with their physician.
  2. You have miserable periods. Maybe your periods last forever, your cramps are unbearable, or your mood swings are intense. Whatever the reason, if you dread your period more than the average woman, it’s worth talking with your gynecologist. There are often hormonal, nutritional, or lifestyle factors that could be causing your frustration.
  3. You’re having sex. From education and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases to discussing your options for birth control, your doctor needs to see you once you become sexually active.
  4. You have pain or discomfort. If you’re feeling symptoms such as burning, itching, or other discomfort, it could be a yeast infection, or it could be something else entirely. Often women self-diagnose themselves with a yeast infection and begin using over-the-counter medications. However, if you have a bacterial infection or an STD, the symptoms can be very similar but won’t be helped with the drugstore creams and inserts. It’s best to visit your doctor and find out for sure why you’re feeling uncomfortable.
  5. Your gynecologist may be the only doctor that you see. More and more frequently, patients are dropping their primary care physician and simply visiting urgent care centers when they’re sick. By continuing to see your gynecologist, it ensures that you receive necessary screenings such as breast exams and Pap smears while also taking inventory of any other medical ailments, weight loss or gain, and other medical issues.

Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine - reviews

I believe that superb service must not go unnoticed. I started prenatal care in my third trimester with Dr. Jenkins and I couldn’t have asked for a better doctor. He was extremely professional and his bedside manner was A+. He is very genuine and it is evident that he is passionate about what he does. I am grateful to have had such an amazing experience, during this pregnancy, with Dr. Jekins and his staff.
