An episiotomy is a small cut of the perineum or lateral vagina to help with passage of the baby during delivery. Over the past few decades the rate of episiotomies has decreased tremendously. It is sometimes performed to help in the delivery of the baby or to decrease potential risk of a 3rd or 4th degree lacerations, but is only performed out of necessity. As each patient and delivery are different, we often times can’t determine if a patient will require an episiotomy until the latter stage of labor.
