If I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy, does that mean I will have it again with my next pregnancy?

Statistically women that were diagnosed with gestational diabetes in a prior pregnancy are approximately 13 times more likely to develop it in a subsequent pregnancy. This does not necessarily mean that every individual patient will develop it, but the chances do increase.
Due to the high risk of developing gestational diabetes in future pregnancies, we generally recommend early pre-natal care that sometimes involves performing a 1 hour glucose tolerance test (the much dreaded flat orange drink) during early second trimester and then repeating it again around 26-28 weeks.
If you had gestational diabetes in prior pregnancy, it is important that you discuss it with your primary care physician as well as your obstetrician because women that develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy are approximately 50% more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes in the future.
