Texas doctors provide compassionate postnatal care for mother
Posted by Dr. Taryll Jenkins
A new baby garners a great deal of attention. However, it is important to remember that mom has just experienced nine challenging months and a serious medical event. Texas ob-gyns, Dr. Taryll Jenkins and Dr. Adebola Falae provide gentle postnatalcare for mother as well as baby. Here are some ways family and friends can help, too.
Someone should be with the mother for at least 24 hours after she returns home, providing assistance with bathroom trips and tending to the baby’s needs. Healthy eating and plenty of fluids are essential for recovery. It is quite thoughtful to bring prepared meals that can be eaten bedside.
New mothers often have stiches, and postpartum bleeding and lochia is normal. It is important for the woman to avoid heavy lifting or vigorous activity for several weeks – up to six with a C-section delivery – to promote healing. Offer to vacuum, get groceries, or handle other strenuous chores.
A hygienic environment is beneficial to baby and mom. When visiting, take a moment to clean surfaces with disinfectant wipes, empty the diaper pail, or take the trash out.
Most importantly, respect the privacy of new parents and the woman’s need for extra rest.
We love helping women transition from pregnancy to the role of motherhood. Postnatal care aids in uneventful recovery from childbirth. Normally, a post-partum checkup is scheduled for six weeks after delivery; possibly sooner for a C-section. The doctor:
Determines if the uterus has returned to pre-pregnancy size.
Checks healing of vaginal tears or incisions.
Performs tests for anemia and thyroid problems.
Checks breasts for mastitis.
Evaluates when sexual relations may be resumed.
Discusses birth control.
