postnatal care for mother from Doctor in texas
A woman’s body endures great change and stress during the nine months of pregnancy and trauma of delivery. The reward is tremendous, but mom needs and deserves postnatal care to resume good health. While baby naturally becomes center of attention, Katy obstetrics & gynecology specialists, Dr. Taryll Jenkins, Dr. Adebola Falae, and Dr. Maria Torres recommend excellent care for mother, as well, to avoid postpartum problems.

Common postpartum issues

After pregnancy, a woman may experience a number of physical and emotional issues ranging from cosmetic to uncomfortable or serious:
  • Constipation.
  • Depression.
  • Difficulty regaining pre-pregnancy figure.
  • Discomfort during intimacy.
  • Excessive bleeding.
  • Fecal or urinary incontinence.
  • Hair loss.
  • Hemorrhoids.
  • Perineal pain (between vagina and rectum).
  • Stretch marks.
  • Swollen breasts, or clogged, infected milk ducts.
  • Uterine, bladder, and kidney infections.
  • Vaginal discharge.

Compassionate attention

Postnatal care is a vital part of an overall pregnancy treatment plan. It helps the mother regain strength and energy necessary for her wellbeing, and to care for baby properly. It is important to rest when baby rests and eat a well-rounded diet. We provide guidance on at-home vaginal care, and suggest abstaining from intimacy for four to six weeks, to allow the vaginal area time to heal.

Our doctors recommend a follow-up examination about six weeks after delivery; sooner if you have had a C-section. At this appointment, your incisions are checked for healing, and breasts are examined. The doctor answers questions about emotional or physical discomfort, and infant care. We provide guidance on nutrition and exercise to help you lose baby weight safely. Since you can become pregnant as soon as menstruation resumes, it is also a good idea to decide on birth control if you do not want another child right away.
