That does not mean you can stop taking care of yourself. You need as much care and attention as your new baby does in order to have the physical and mental strength to care for your baby and home. Although most pregnancy care focuses on the nine months of carrying the baby, the postpartum period requires care as well. This period lasts six to eight weeks and begins right after the baby is born. During this period, the mother goes through physical and emotional care making postnatal care important.

Tips for postnatal care

There are a number of tips to help you heal and to take care of yourself after the birth of your child.
  • Rest when you can. Childbirth is exhausting. Your body just went through serious changes to bring a child into the world. Now, you have to take care of an infant who needs to be fed every couple of hours and changed regularly even through the wee hours of the night. Sleep when the baby sleeps, ask for help, and delegate household responsibilities to allow yourself time to rest.

  • Don’t hesitate to call the doctor. Your body may feel weak for the first couple weeks after childbirth. Your postnatal visit with your obstetrician is an important time to review your physical and mental health. This is a time to discuss any positive or negative feelings, to check how your body is feeling, and to ask any questions. If you experience fever, shivering, dizziness, or pain, contact your doctor.

  • Focus on your own diet and nutrition. Although you may be busy taking care of your baby’s needs, do not forget about your own.
  • Walk or stay active. Your physician may give you physical restrictions immediately after childbirth. However, activities such as walking, breathing exercises, and pelvic floor exercises help you stay active and beat stress. If you were very active before pregnancy, do not assume you can jump right back into your normal fitness routine. Consult your physician on possible low-intensity exercises.
  • Drink plenty of water. You will be losing water accumulated during pregnancy. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of water. Women who are breastfeeding need to stay hydrated as well.
  • Pay attention to your hygiene. A new mother can get infections that can slow the healing process. Others who are around the baby can also pass germs. Maintain proper hygiene by washing hands and ensuring visitors follow good hygiene as well to avoid passing infections and germs to the baby.
  • Ask for help. Although you may be a supermom, do not hesitate to ask for help. Exerting yourself unnecessarily can exhaust your already weak body. Get help from family members or friends when possible to help with household chores such as laundry and dishes.
  • Be aware of the baby blues. Postpartum blues are a real concern. New and seasoned mothers can experience this issue. Your body goes through hormonal changes making you feel emotional, irritable, and weepy. This is normal. However, if these feelings linger beyond the first couple weeks, intensify, or combine with new symptoms such as appetite loss, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, trouble sleeping, or disinterest in the baby, it is time to seek help from your physician for postpartum depression.
  • Do not focus on losing baby fat. Baby fat can be difficult to lose. Following a healthy diet and exercise regimen when you are cleared for it can help you lose the weight. Do not obsess over it or it will add unnecessary stress to your already busy world. Just be patient.
Schedule an appointment with your postnatal care center about six weeks after giving birth to discuss any symptoms, questions, or concerns you may have. This is a time to focus on the mother’s health and wellbeing to check for proper healing.
