Katy physician helps patients understand common complications during pregnancy
Posted by Dr. Taryll Jenkins
When a woman is pregnant, her body goes through many changes. While these changes are healthy they can be troublesome. Dr. Adebola Falae of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Medicine in Katy, TX, assures her patients that most pregnancies are uncomplicated. However, she provides the necessary information about common pregnancy complications.
Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks, although most miscarriages occur in the first trimester
Premature labor occurs when the patient begins to dilate before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Because babies need as much time as possible, the doctor can try to delay labor by prescribing bed rest, certain medications, or even hospitalization to prevent preterm birth.
Preeclampsia is a condition in which the patient has high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Symptoms can progress quickly and can be dangerous for both the mother and the baby, so women with high risk of preeclampsia should be monitored closely.
Gestational diabetes is a common but serious condition in which the patient’s blood sugar levels are too high. Patients are screened for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks. For those who do develop the condition, there is a 25 to 50 percent chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
Placenta previa is a condition that occurs when the placenta is lying too low in the uterus, either next to or covering the cervix. As the placenta grows it can cause bleeding and other complications including early delivery. Many women who have placenta previa at the mid-point of their pregnancy do not still have it when they deliver. Those who do will deliver via C-section.
Dr. Falae monitors her patients with physical exams, blood work, and ultrasounds. Patients should be sure to report any troubling symptoms and call the doctor at 281-347-2600 with questions.
