Expectations for expectant moms

Symptoms can differ from pregnancy to pregnancy due in part to variations in hormone levels. Moms can expect a few “classic” symptoms that are not typically cause for concern.

Morning Sickness

It’s common to have nausea, with or without vomiting. It often starts around a month after you become pregnant, but the onset of nausea and its severity can vary. If stomach upset is accompanied by severe vomiting that doesn’t subside, you’ll want to discuss this with Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Falae during an appointment. Hyperemesis gravidarum is often accompanied by:
  • Severe dehydration
  • Light-headedness
  • Low blood pressure
  • At least 5 percent loss of pre-pregnancy weight

The doctors monitor these and other symptoms and offer appropriate management or treatment, which may include supplementing fluids to restore hydration, electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients for you and your baby’s well-being.

Fatigue

Elevated levels of the progesterone hormone can cause you to feel unusually tired, especially early in your pregnancy. Your body is working overtime to make more blood and carry nutrients to a growing baby. It’s also common for exhaustion to subside during the second trimester, only to return leading up to delivery as baby puts more demands on your body.

Fatigue that is severe, unrelenting, and lasts from trimester to trimester should be discussed with the doctors, especially if you’re out of breath a lot. The doctors will monitor many indicators of your health. They may find your red blood cells don’t have enough hemoglobin. Anemia is one of those easily-treatable conditions, as long guidance comes from the specialists you can trust at Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine.
