Learning that you’re pregnant may be one of the most life-changing moments to happen to a woman. It’s common to be excited, happy, nervous, and overwhelmed. Trusted OB/GYN doctor Dr. Adebola Falae of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine in Katy helps her patients understand what to expect during the first trimester.

Prenatal care and doctor’s visits

While your first appointment won’t occur until about eight weeks of pregnancy, prenatal care is critical for the health of the baby and the mother. The initial appointment will include time with the doctors and nurses to provide your medical history and answer questions, blood testing, and a physical exam. Your physician will listen for the baby’s heartbeat and may perform an ultrasound to view the baby. Your following appointments will only include a weight check, urine test, and monitoring the baby. Certain tests to determine the health of the fetus and screen for disabilities will be offered during this period.

Taking care of yourself

One of the most common first trimester complaints is exhaustion. Try to take time to rest when you can, turn over some of the chores or errands to your partner when possible, and say ‘no’ when it’s not critical. You won’t feel this way forever; most patients get their energy back in the second trimester.

The other common complaint of early pregnancy is morning sickness, which for many women lasts all day long. You can try to keep nausea at bay by eating small meals throughout the day; avoiding rich, greasy, or spicy foods; keeping safe foods like crackers, Jell-O, chicken soup, and ginger ale nearby, and sucking on hard candies or lollipops. You can also try taking your prenatal vitamins at night if they make your nausea worse.
