Helping Fulshear women make informed decisions: Do you need a total hysterectomy?

A total (complete) hysterectomy is a serious surgery, which will have future implications on your health. It is important to understand the risks, benefits, and long-term effects before making this decision.

Why have a hysterectomy?

This procedure involves the surgical removal of the uterus. In some circumstances, only part of the uterus is removed. This is known as a partial hysterectomy. When the entire uterus is removed, it is called a total hysterectomy. Sometimes, the surrounding tissues, ovaries, or both may be removed.

In some cases, a hysterectomy is the only treatment option, such as cancer, severe infection, or severe prolapse. In other instances, the procedure is optional. In the past, it was frequently recommended as the simplest solution to a variety of common uterine conditions. Even today, about nine out of ten hysterectomies performed are classified as optional. However, progressive, conservative physicians such as Dr. Taryll Jenkins offer the least invasive solutions possible.

Surgical menopause

A hysterectomy does not always involve the removal of the ovaries. Dr. Jenkins does not recommend this unless it is absolutely essential, because it causes instant (surgical) menopause. The sudden transition often results in much more severe symptoms than natural menopause. If removing the ovaries is necessary, Dr. Jenkins will recommend a personalized hormone therapy plan to minimize or eliminate the unpleasant effects.

Recovery time

One of the most common concerns about hysterectomies is the extensive, painful recovery time. Fortunately, that can be greatly reduced with modern technology. When a hysterectomy, or any other surgery, is necessary, Dr. Jenkins uses the laparoscopic technique. It is performed with tiny incisions, and a video-guided procedure. This method has lower risk of complication, less discomfort, and a dramatically shorter, more comfortable recovery.
