The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends girls have their first gynecological visit between the ages of 13 and 15 years. A pelvic exam isn’t usually ordered at this time unless there are suspicious symptoms. The doctor checks for abnormal redness, swelling, and sores indicative of gynecological disorders such as STDs and ovarian cysts.

A physical gives Drs. Jenkins and Falae an overall picture of your health. Your blood pressure is checked and the doctors are skilled at looking for signs of underlying problems.

A Pap test is a standard part of your visit if you are at least 21 years old. Also called a Pap smear, cells are collected from the lower part of the uterus or cervix to detect changes that may point to cancer. It’s generally done every three years.

If you’re at least 30 years old, HPV testing may be recommended. A sexually transmitted infection, the human papillomavirus has been linked to cervical cancer and several other cancers. The ACOG recommends annual mammograms if you are least 40 years old, while clinical breast exams are advised every three years after age 20. Thyroid screening, colonoscopy, and bone density tests may be ordered after aged 50.

Your needs and risk factors are unique, so don’t delay making an appointment with your compassionate health partners, Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Falae.
