Katy doctors answer common obstetrics and gynecology questions
Posted by Dr. Taryll Jenkins
At Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine in Katy, TX you have the choice of a male or female physician, for comfortable rapport. Dr. Jenkins, Dr. Falae, and Dr. Torres share some of the questions they are asked most frequently.
Prevention and screening
When should a woman begin having pelvic exams? Upon becoming sexually active, or at the age of 21 – whichever occurs first. Earlier if experiencing problems.
At what age should mammograms begin? Starting at age 40, women should have a mammogram every other year. Increased risk factors, such as family history of breast cancer, may warrant earlier or more frequent screening.
Why is a Pap smear recommended? This simple, painless test screens for cervical cancer. Early diagnosis significantly improves cure rate. We suggest the test every third year for women aged 21 to 65.
Are birth control pills the only reliable option? No! Women have a number of alternatives, both temporary and permanent, for dependable family planning. Our doctors take plenty of time to understand your goals, then guide you to the best choice for your lifestyle.
When should prenatal care start? Ideally, before you conceive, to ensure the healthiest possible circumstance for your baby. Otherwise, schedule your first visit when you get a positive result with a home pregnancy test or miss a period. Bear in mind that it is never too late to gain benefits from prenatal care.
What medications are safe during pregnancy? Prenatal vitamins, with or without a prescription, are safe when taken as directed. Diabetic moms must continue insulin or other medication to control the condition. However, dosages may be adjusted. Talk with your obstetrician before taking any other prescription or OTC medications, herbal remedies, or supplements.
