Katy physician addresses common gynecology concerns

A trusted gynecologist is an important part of a woman's health team. In many cases, a gynecologist is the only physician a woman sees on a regular basis. However, regardless of whether a woman only visits her gynecologist regularly or if she has several physicians on speed dial, several common gynecology problems cause a woman concern.

Dr. Taryll Jenkins of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine has been helping women address issues from irregular periods to uterine fibroids for many years. Here, Dr. Jenkins discusses several of the most common women's health issues:
  • Heavy periods, frequent spotting, or abnormal bleeding – Sometimes patients believe that they just have to learn to live with very heavy periods or unexplained bleeding between periods. In fact, these symptoms are often caused by a hormonal imbalance that can be addressed with medication. However, in other cases, the bleeding could be caused by any number of things including uterine fibroids, an out of place IUD, endometriosis, or several other conditions. The only way to know for sure is to visit your gynecologist, describe your symptoms, and perhaps undergo testing.
  • Pain in the abdomen – Some cramping during your menstrual cycle is completely normal. However, severe pain, or cramping all the time can be cause for concern. Patients may have a fibroid tumor or a uterine cyst. Both of these conditions will often resolve themselves in time. However, your doctor may want to monitor you by scheduling a series of ultrasounds. In other cases, the pain may be caused by endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the tissue that lines the uterus moves outside the uterus into the abdominal cavity. Because infertility occurs in some women with endometriosis, your doctor will want to monitor you closely and treat the condition if it grows too much.
  • Abnormal Pap smear – A Pap smear is an important test because it detects abnormal cells on the cervix. As these abnormalities can be an early indication of cancer, gynecologists will want to follow up on any abnormal results following a pap smear. In some cases, the physician will simply choose to repeat the test. In other cases, he may perform a colposcopy, which allows him to remove a very small amount cervical tissue, which will be biopsied by a medical laboratory. After the biopsy, your gynecologist will determine if the abnormal cells need to be removed.
