Well-Woman Exam

One of the most important aspects of gynecological care is the annual well-woman exam. During this annual exam, the gynecologist will examine the reproductive organs, conduct a breast exam, test for STDs, discuss contraception and perform a pap smear.

What to expect during a well-woman exam:

The doctor will begin by discussing your personal health and any concerns you may have. The pelvic exam starts with examining the outside of the vagina for abnormalities before moving on to check the reproductive organs on the inside of your body. With your feet in stirrups and your legs bent, the doctor will insert a speculum to allow visual access of the vagina and cervix. While you may feel some pressure during a pelvic exam, it should not be painful.

The doctor will also do an internal exam where two fingers are placed in the vagina and the other hand is placed on the lower part of your stomach. This is done to feel the reproductive organs from the outside of the body. A breast exam is done to feel for lumps or other abnormalities.

During the pelvic exam, your doctor may perform a pap test which is a sampling of cells to check for HPV, cancer, or other abnormalities. If you are sexually active, your doctor may also take a swab of tissue or blood test to look for sexually transmitted diseases.
