Preparing for parenthood in Houston

If you’re expecting a baby now or planning for a baby in the future, there are likely many thoughts and questions in your mind. As your friends, family, and random strangers in the grocery store will tell you, “A baby changes everything.” Truth be told, it is nearly impossible to be completely prepared for parenthood. However, there are some thing you can address before the baby comes that will make your life after the baby much easier.
  • Take parenting classes. Especially for first-time moms and dads, parenting classes can help parents know what to expect during delivery and in the first few weeks with a newborn. Parenting classes will help you learn about things such as how to bathe a newborn, what to expect from breastfeeding, how to care for the baby’s umbilical cord, and so much more. Taking these classes together can help the parents begin to talk about how they will care for the child together when he or she arrives.
  • Get the essentials. A trip to a department store can feel overwhelming for new parents. Aisles of pacifiers, hundreds of blankets, and rows and rows of strollers, car seats, and cribs can make a new parent’s head spin. Take a trusted friend and a list of the items you must purchase before the baby comes. Remember that many items can wait until you discover which brands and items are best suited for you and your baby. However, you’ll need a car seat to leave the hospital, plenty of diapers and diaper supplies, a place for the baby to sleep, some clothing, and bottles if you’re not planning to breastfeed.
  • Take care of yourself. Not only do healthy moms have a better chance of delivering a healthy baby, taking care of yourself is critical to your overall health and wellness. This can include everything from ensuring excellent prenatal care to making time to relax and enjoy yourself during your pregnancy. Schedule a massage, make exercise a priority, enjoy a nice dinner with your friends and family, or buy a new pair of shoes. Take the time to remind yourself that you’re a critical part of your family and your wellness is important.
