Navigating infertility with your Katy physician

There may be nothing in life that's more frustrating and heartbreaking than not getting pregnant when you're actively trying. However, many couples across the country must address this reality. It can cause tears, anger, misplaced resentment, and feelings of guilt. It can feel like the whole world is getting pregnant and having babies while every month is unsuccessful for them.

Infertility, while not an easy process, is not the same as sterility. Infertility can be managed and it can often end with a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. It starts by finding a compassionate physician who will not downplay your concerns but will instead take them seriously and help you find the cause and right treatment.

It's important to note that even in couples who have no medical or reproductive issues, pregnancy isn't as easy as it looks on TV. Conception takes exact timing and little bit of luck. Therefore, infertility is not diagnosed after a month or two of trying to conceive. Instead, it's diagnosed after a full year of unprotected sex if the woman is under the age of 35. If she's over the age of 35, infertility is diagnosed after six months of trying to conceive.

If you have been trying to conceive with no success, it may be time to schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. Dr. Taryll Jenkins of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine has helped countless patients face infertility and manage successful treatment plans. He understands the emotional toll that trying to conceive can take on a patient and her entire family.

Your first step with Dr. Jenkins will be to review your medical history as well as your partner's medical history. Dr. Jenkins will determine if there are any factors in your medical history or lifestyle that could affect conception. For example, smoking and drinking can lower sperm count and release of eggs. In addition, being underweight or overweight can make it harder to conceive.

If there are no immediate causes of infertility, Dr. Jenkins may suggest further testing to determine why you've had trouble conceiving. He may also prescribe medication to improve ovulation. The first step always starts with a conversation, however. If you and your partner are concerned about infertility, call the Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine today.
