Extended cycle contraceptive pills help Katy women prevent pregnancy and minimize their monthly periods

Birth Control Options from Dr. Taryll Jenkins
For years, oral contraceptives worked one way: Patients took active pills for three weeks, then took a week of sugar pills, during which they experienced their monthly menstrual cycle. While this offered women pregnancy prevention as well as a level of predictability, it did little to minimize PMS or other symptoms women experience during their monthly period.

Today, women have additional options with extended cycle pills. Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Falae of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine in Katy, TX, has helped countless women understand their birth control options. He tells patients that extended cycle pills are very similar to traditional birth control pills; however, instead of taking sugar pills every fourth week, patients continuously take the active pills, typically for three months.

Advantages of extended cycle pills

  • Delaying or eliminating monthly menstruation
  • Lessening of cramps, bloating, mood swings, and other menstruation symptoms
  • The ability to adjust your menstrual cycle for life events
For some, their monthly menstrual cycle is reassurance that their body is working properly. Others believe that a “normal” cycle is 28 days and worry that extending it is not healthy. However, studies have shown that it is safe and effective to delay or skip monthly periods and there is not a “normal” cycle. Women who are not on birth control pills have cycles that vary greatly.

Having fewer and lighter periods often appeals to patients who experience:

  • Heavy bleeding or long and painful menstrual cycles.
  • Significant bloating, breast soreness, or mood swings in the days prior to menstruation
  • Trouble using tampons or sanitary pads
  • Health conditions that get worse during menstruation, such as endometriosis, anemia, migraines, or asthma
  • An upcoming event like a wedding, a vacation, or a work conference that would be make dealing with their monthly period inconvenient
