Finding the safest birth control method in Katy, TX

Although having a baby can be a wonderful addition to many families, there are many times when a woman is not ready for the commitment that children require. It could be before she’s ready to have children, or after the first baby comes, when her family is complete, or maybe she never wants to have children. Whatever the reason, finding a safe and effective form of birth control can help women, and their families, have the family that they want. With a quick examination and an honest conversation, Dr. Taryll Jenkins can help women find the right birth control option for their unique situation.

There are several types of birth control available for women. Deciding which option to use depends largely on the woman’s preferences and lifestyle. For example:
  • Birth control pill: One of the most common birth control methods, the pill is an oral medication that prevents pregnancy. There are many types of pills, some that include more or less progestin and estrogen than others. Pills can also be used to regulate or control a woman’s period and help improve symptoms of PMS. For patients who want extra protection the pill can be used in addition to other methods such as condoms.
  • IUD: Implant uterine devices are a popular choice among women who have had a child but are not yet ready for another. While they can be removed at any time, once inserted the device can prevent pregnancy for several years. They typically have more of an upfront cost than the pill, but provide patients with a long-term and effective solution
  • Patch and Ring: Birth control patches and rings are devices that are applied to the skin or inserted into the vagina. They stay in place for three weeks and then are removed for one week, in which a woman has her period. Some women prefer this method because it doesn’t require the daily pill.
Regardless of the option that women choose to prevent pregnancy it’s important to remember that those mentioned above are only effective in preventing pregnancy. They do not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. To prevent STDs a woman must insist that her partner wear a condom or barrier device.
