Exploring birth control options in Katy – the benefits of Nexplanon

Exploring Birth Control Options in Katy Area

Your choice of birth control methods can affect your health, and the success of your family planning. This is an intensely personal decision, involving emotional, physical, and lifestyle factors. The best choice is different for everyone. Dr. Taryll L. Jenkins, of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine in Katy, TX, can help you make the right choice for you.

One of the most important considerations is reversibility. If you are certain that you will never want to become pregnant in the future, permanent sterilization may be right for you. On the other hand, if you think you may want to become pregnant in the near future, a short-term, easily reversible method may be best. For many women, the right answer lies somewhere in-between. If you might want to become pregnant in the future, but not right now, long-term, reversible birth control such as Nexplanon may be the answer you’ve been seeking.

What is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a tiny, flexible plastic rod, implanted just under the skin on your arm. You may be familiar with Implanon; Nexplanon offers the same convenient birth control, and the same effective ingredient with an improved delivery system. The implants are now radio-opaque, meaning they are visible in x-rays, for easy, accurate removal. It delivers a steady, low dose of progestational hormone. It offers reliable protection for up to three years, at which time the implant is removed. If you wish to end birth control sooner, the implant can be removed at any time. If you wish to continue birth control with Nexplanon beyond three years, a new implant can be placed when the current one is removed.

The procedure

The timing of a Nexplanon implant is important, to ensure that you are not pregnant at the time of the procedure. The appointment may be scheduled to coincide with a specific phase of your menstrual cycle. It may also be done of the same day that an existing contraceptive device is removed. You may need to take a pregnancy test.

The area of your arm where the implant is placed (between the biceps and triceps) is numbed for your comfort. Next, the small device (about the size of a match) is inserted using a special applicator. Dr. Jenkins will check that the implant is in place. For the next three years, you can enjoy convenient and effective birth control with no pill, patch, or device to remember.

Dr. Jenkins will explain the potential risks, side effects, and benefits of Nexplanon, as well as the alternatives. Call 855 346 8610 today and schedule an appointment.
