Obstetrics specialists discuss eating and exercising for a well mom and baby in Fulshear

Obstetrics Fulshear in Katy Tx Area

Obstetrics specialists near Fulshear partner with you to minimize risks that can arise during pregnancy.

Weight gain

It’s important that you and your baby get sufficient nutrients. While pre-pregnancy weight and age are among variables that influence your caloric needs, the Institute of Medicine reports that women whose weight is within the normal range should gain 25 to 35 pounds. Women with a body mass index of 25 to 29.9 are advised to gain from 15 to 25 pounds. If your pre-pregnancy weight was below the healthy range, guidelines suggest that you gain between 28 to 30 pounds. Dr. Jenkins and his team can advise on how to reach your weight gain goals.

Prenatal vitamins

It’s vital to take a prenatal supplement in addition to eating healthy. Additional vitamins and minerals ensure you and your baby are getting sufficient nutrients like iron and folic acid. Drs. Jenkins and Falae review your vitamin needs and discuss questions you may have about selecting a supplement.

Exercise

Physical activity is always important to keep your weight in check. It’s generally advised that pregnant women exercise at moderate intensity for at least 20 to 30 minutes most days of the week. Walking, running, swimming, cycling, yoga, Pilates, tennis, and strength training are all good choices to stay mentally and physically well. Patients should exercise caution or avoid activities with a high chance of falling, such as downhill snow skiing, or contact sports. Like exercise before and after pregnancy, stay hydrated but, additionally, pregnant women should avoid activities that involve lying on their backs for prolonged periods. Stop if you have calf or chest pain, headache, or bleeding.
