Katy-area gynecologist discusses advantages, insertion and removal of Nexplanon

In Katy-area Gynecologist Discusses Advantages, Insertion and Removal of Nexplanon

As women consider their birth control options, there are many factors that are important to them. Some want a birth control method that they don’t have to think about every day or each time they have intercourse. Others want something with minimal side effects. Still others want a birth control method that gives them the ability to change their mind at nearly any point.

Nexplanon is a birth control device that is gaining popularity. It is a tiny, flexible implant that is discreetly placed below the skin of the inside of the upper arm. Nexplanon offers the benefits of being completely discreet while offering up to three years of pregnancy prevention. This allows a woman freedom from daily, weekly, or monthly doses of birth control. It works by releasing progestin, a hormone commonly found in birth control pills, which keeps the egg from being released. Similar to the pill, Nexplanon is 99% effective.

Inserting the Nexplanon implant is a simple and straightforward procedure that is performed in the doctor’s office. It is important that the implant be inserted during the right time of your menstrual cycle, typically the first days of your period and after taking a pregnancy test. Your physician will numb the insertion area and place the implant underneath the skin of the upper right arm. A pressure bandage will be worn for a day, followed by a smaller bandage for several days.

Nexplanon is effective for three years, but can be removed at any time. If, after three years, you want to continue with Nexplanon a new implant can be inserted immediately.
