Miscellaneous Information in Katy , TX area at Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine

So many things change when you become pregnant, you may not know which lifestyle modifications you need to make. If you do not find what you are looking for in this guide, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 855 346 8610.

Dental Care

Dental care is an important aspect of health and wellness and should not be neglected. Unless urgent, dental treatments should be postponed until after the first trimester. At this time, the following are appropriate:

  • X-rays. Dental staff should use the proper safety precautions to protect the abdomen.
  • Anesthesia. Local anesthesia (Lidocaine) without epinephrine.
  • Pain medication. Vicodin, Tylenol #3, Norco.
  • Antibiotics. Amoxicillin. If allergic, contact our office for possible alternatives.

During a healthy pregnancy, you may travel up to about 34 weeks. Talk with your doctor before planning an extended car ride or flight.

Considerations for air travel:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Bring along extra pillows to keep you comfortable
  • Do not travel to third-world countries while pregnant
  • Avoid flying during the last few weeks of pregnancy

Due to the extra demands during pregnancy, your immune system is somewhat weakened. It is recommended that you receive the flu and dTap vaccines. You may discuss vaccination if you are planning to become pregnant in the near future.

Hair and Nails

As long as it is done in a well-ventilated area, it is acceptable to perm, highlight, or color your hair while pregnant. Likewise, manicures and pedicures are safe with sufficient ventilation.

Hot Tub

Raising the core body temperature too high can present complications to your pregnancy. Soaking in water or sitting in a sauna hotter than 100 degrees is not recommended.

Seat Belts

It is necessary to wear your seat belt. The lower belt should be around your hips rather than your abdomen.

You may paint while pregnant as long as ventilation is good.

You may exterminate your home while pregnant. Ventilation must be sufficient.

Banking Cord Blood

Cord blood contains vital stem cells that can be used in the event of certain illnesses, and you may want to consider the option of banking it for personal use within your family, or non-related individuals. Cord blood may be:

  • Saved in a private cord blood bank for personal use in the future. There is a fee for banking.
  • Saved for use by a named family member for necessary medical care. Usually there is no fee for this type of banking.
  • Donated to a public cord blood bank for no cost. This makes vital stem cells available to people in need of medical treatment.

"He is a good listener. I have struggled with OB/GYN issues for years that have virtually disappeared after seeing him for a year. He gave good advice, prescribed appropriate medicine, and ordered essential & telling lab tests."
