Katy women ask, “Can a hysterectomy be a minimally invasive procedure?”

Minimal Invasive Procedure at Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine in Katy Area

A hysterectomy, the procedure that removes a woman’s uterus, is not a procedure that most women undergo lightly. Often it is the result of a condition that is either not getting better using other treatments or one in which removing the uterus gives the patient the best chance for overall health. Some of the reasons a gynecologist may suggest a hysterectomy include uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse (a condition in which the uterus slides from its correct position into the canal of the vagina), cancer, endometriosis, lasting pelvic pain, or abnormal bleeding. With the exception of cancer, other treatment procedures are usually attempted before undergoing a hysterectomy.

Once your physician determines that a hysterectomy is your best course of treatment, you will have several options. Depending on whether you need to have all or only a portion of your uterus removed, you and the physician will decide if the you to have an open surgery hysterectomy or an MIP hysterectomy.

An open surgery hysterectomy is the traditional, and most common, hysterectomy procedure. In this procedure, the doctor makes and incision in the woman’s abdomen and removes the uterus. The surgery is conducted in the hospital where the patient stays for several days.

However, some patients will be eligible for a minimally invasive procedure, or an MIP hysterectomy. With a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the surgeon is able to make only several small incisions into the abdomen or vagina and using cameras and advanced tools, he removes the uterus.
