GYNECOLOGISTS IN KATY EXPLAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF HIGH RISK PREGNANCY CARE

High risk pregnancy care from gynecologist near me in Katy, TX

People often think of pregnancy as a time of excitement and anticipation. For most women, it is exactly these emotions they feel when finding out they’re pregnant, during their pregnancy, and heading to the delivery room. However, for some women, that excitement is also mixed with anxiety. Some pregnancies are deemed to be high risk. Women with high risk pregnancies require a higher level of care. Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine, located in Katy, TX, understands this. We are committed to providing every woman with top-quality care for their pregnancy, whether high risk or not.

Definition of what a high risk pregnancy is:

If either you or the baby are at an increased chance of a health problem, we will call your pregnancy high risk.  This guarantees that you receive the appropriate level of treatment for all stages of your pregnancy and delivery.

Reasons a pregnancy might be high-risk:

  • You have a pre-existing health condition, such as diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure, cancer, kidney disease, asthma, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis,or heart problems.
  • You are older than 35. We term this advanced maternal age, and no matter how healthy the pregnancy, because of the increased risk of complications we will term it a high risk pregnancy.
  • You are younger than 17. Pregnancies that occur prior to 17 have an increased risk of hypertension in pregnancy, a higher risk of preeclampsia, a higher occurrence of anemia, and lack of adequate weight gain to support the growing baby.
  • You have a history of miscarriages.
  • Your baby is found to have a genetic condition, such as a heart problem or Down syndrome.
  • Problems with prior pregnancies: Some women are more prone to developing issues such as pre-term labor and preeclampsia.
  • You are on certain medications for existing health conditions.

How high risk pregnancy care differs:

Due to the number of factors that go into the decision whether a pregnancy is high risk or not, there is no one set method for high risk pregnancy care. However, some factors that will be different include:

  • More prenatal visits. We may begin seeing you more than once monthly sooner in your pregnancy.
  • More ultrasounds: These help us ensure that your baby is growing properly.
  • More urine tests: This helps us closely monitor for signs of urinary tract infections and preeclampsia.
  • Tests for genetic problems with your unborn baby: If you are above 35, the risk of your baby having certain conditions increases. We will help monitor this possibility using tests and other diagnostic measures.

Things you can do to help have a healthy pregnancy:

The term high risk isn’t a guarantee of a problem. For many women, we’ve found that if they take a proactive part in having a healthy pregnancy it helps with any anxiety they may feel. Some things you can do are take any medications or vitamins prescribed to you by us, take folic acid daily, check with your doctor before beginning or continuing with any exercise regimen, don’t smoke or drink alcoholic beverages, limit contact with those with colds or other illnesses, and eat a healthy diet. The single most important step you can take is to ensure you keep to your schedule of doctor visits. This guarantees that we continue to monitor you closely and that tests that are needed can be run at the optimal time.
