Gynecological Surgery

Gynecological Surgery in Katy Area

Although every physician approaches care in the most conservative manner possible, there are certain instances in which a surgical procedure becomes necessary. Some gynecological surgeries facilitate the diagnosis of disease, while others are aimed at the correction of women’s health issues. A few of the common surgical procedures performed by an OB/GYN are listed here.

Colposcopy

Because pap-smears can only indicate that a problem is present, but cannot specify the root of the problem, further investigation is necessary. Colposcopies are performed as a diagnostic procedure when a patient experiences abnormal pap-smear results. This procedure is performed right in the doctor’s office in a similar fashion to a pap smear. Taking only about 15 minutes to complete, a colposcopy involves the application of a mild acid to the cervix, which allows the doctor to easily view the cervix through a colposcope. Should abnormal areas be viewed, a biopsy will be taken and sent to a lab for further evaluation.

Cryosurgery

Also called cryotherapy, this procedure may follow a colposcopy when abnormal cervical cells are present. In this procedure, liquid nitrogen is delivered directly to abnormal cells, freezing them, and subsequently destroying them.

Hysterectomy

Used in specific cases where alternative options have not been successful, a hysterectomy may be necessary to correct issues such as excessive bleeding or chronic pain, fibroid tumors, pelvic prolapse, cancer of the uterus, ovaries, or cervix, or endometriosis. A highly customized procedure, a hysterectomy is planned based on the specific issue a patient may have. In some cases, only a portion of the uterus is removed, called a subtotal hysterectomy. During a total hysterectomy, the surgeon will remove both the uterus and the cervix. When necessary, typically as a treatment to remove cancer, a total hysterectomy may be performed, during which the uterus is removed, along with the cervix and all tissue immediately surrounding the uterus, and the top portion of the vagina. When the ovaries are also removed, the procedure is called an oophorectomy.
