Common GYN surgical procedures following an abnormal Pap smear in Katy, TX

Gyn Surgical Procedures in Katy Area

Dr. Taryll Jenkins of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine believes in taking the least invasive approach possible to treatment. However, in some cases, surgery may be necessary to address the patient’s issue. While Dr. Jenkins provides a wide variety of gynecological services, some of the most common surgeries involve diagnosis and treatment following an abnormal Pap smear.

To understand these surgeries it’s important to recognize how a Pap smear test is used. During a Pap smear, a small sample of cells are removed from the cervix and tested to determine if there are any cell abnormalities. The test does not determine if the abnormal cells are cancerous. Therefore, if a woman has an abnormal Pap smear result the gynecologist will need to perform further testing to determine the cause of the abnormalities. The first step to investigate further is a colposcopy. This procedure will feel similar to the Pap smear test and it is performed in the doctor’s office. Essentially, the doctor will use a colposcope, similar to a microscope, and a medical solution to identify and view the abnormal cells. If the doctor identifies abnormal cells, he will remove a small amount and send them to be biopsied.

If that test indicates that cancerous or pre-cancerous cells are present, the physician will need to determine the next step for treatment. The cells can be removed several ways including cryosurgery in which the cells are destroyed using liquid nitrogen. Another option to remove the cells includes LEEP surgery. In this procedure, the cells are cut away using a very fine wire carrying an electrical current. Both of these procedures are performed in the doctor’s office using local anesthesia. Following the procedure the patient may feel some cramping and discomfort. She may also notice minor bleeding or discharge.
