Condoms may the first type of contraception that come into mind. Barrier methods block the sperm from reaching an egg. Like their male counterparts, female condoms are made from a type of rubber and are placed to line the vagina. Effectiveness depends on many factors, including:
- Frequency of sexual activity
- Proper use
Besides condoms, birth control pills probably come to mind. These hormonal methods contain either progestin or estrogen and progestin to stop the eggs from leaving the ovaries or to prevent sperm from reaching eggs by thickening the cervical mucus. NuvaRing is a combination hormonal method, containing both estrogen and progestin. Once you place the ring in your vagina, it releases a low dose of hormones continuously on a four-week cycle (three weeks in, one week out) to prevent pregnancy.
You may opt for a nonsurgical outpatient procedure such as Nexplanon®, which releases the progestin hormone etonogestrel. Inserted underneath the skin on the inside of your upper arm, this flexible insert can prevent pregnancy for up to three years. Afterward, you can have a new insert implanted.
Still other procedures include Intrauterine Devices for long-term pregnancy prevention of up to 10 years. Mirena and Skyla contain hormones that prevent sperm from reaching the uterus. Paragard releases copper to produce an inflammatory reaction that prevents fertilization.
