Urology

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a common cause of urinary problems such as incontinence and frequent urinary tract infections. It can also bring about fecal incontinence, and vaginal and abdominal pain. These issues can significantly impact a woman's daily life. Dr. Jenkins is able to diagnose and treat many of the problems associated with pelvic floor dysfunction including:
  • Vaginal vault prolapse
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Kidney stones
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Cystocele
  • Rectocele
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Cystitis
Pelvic floor dysfunction can be caused by a number of related medical disorders or it can simply result from the normal changes of childbirth and aging. Once a woman delivers a baby, the muscles which provide support to the structure of the vagina, bladder, rectum, and uterus relax. This allows the bladder to begin to fall or prolapse (push down into the vagina), or even protrude from the vagina. Dr. Jenkins can repair the situation with a procedure that provides support and corrects the positioning – it situates the bladder back into its natural place. The same is true for the rectum, uterus, or cervix. Prolapse can cause bladder or gastrointestinal problems, and suspension of the uterus or removal of the uterus can prevent further prolapse.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is one of the most common problems suffered by mature females. As many as 50 percent of women suffer from some form of the disorder, but many do not seek treatment. In some cases, physical therapy or diet can help, but others require surgery or a combination of care. Dr. Jenkins uses advanced technology including laparoscopy and minimally invasive procedures to perform bladder suspension, pelvic floor surgery, vaginal reconstruction, and more.

If you are suffering from any of these problems please talk with Dr. Jenkins. In the caring, compassionate environment of Jenkins Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Medicine he and his staff will help you find a solution.
