Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting events in a woman's life. Dr. Jenkins and his staff understand how special this time is, therefore providing highly skilled prenatal care in a comfortable, gentle environment.
From the diagnosis of your pregnancy until you deliver, Dr. Jenkins will monitor your condition and answer your questions. For your convenience, all necessary blood work and routine ultrasounds can be performed in the office, which is located at the hospital for ease of transfer if necessary.
Prenatal care is important even early in pregnancy, as some problems can lead to miscarriage or other complications. Your first visit usually happens when you are less than ten weeks along. At this appointment you will meet Dr. Jenkins and:
- Confirm your pregnancy with ultrasound
- Establish a due date
- Have a routine well-woman checkup if needed
- Begin blood work
After this initial visit, you will follow-up with Dr. Jenkins every four weeks unless problems arise. You always have access to our well-trained staff by phone.
At 16 weeks, you may choose to screen your baby for chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome and Spina Bifida.
At 20 weeks, we will send you for an ultrasound performed by a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist. This ultrasound determines if your baby is anatomically appropriate and checks for other possible problems. You may also find out the gender of your baby at this time!
Between 24 weeks and 35 weeks, you will begin to see Dr. Jenkins every two weeks to determine if you have symptoms such as early contractions or bleeding which may warrant a change in your care.
At about 25 -27 weeks we will test you for diabetes.
At 35 weeks, Dr. Jenkins will assess the cervix for changes. You will also have your final ultrasound to verify your baby's size and position.
From 35 weeks until delivery, you will see Dr. Jenkins every week. He will monitor how you are feeling and make sure your baby is growing aptly, right up until the stork arrives.
