Birth Control
With new developments in pregnancy prevention in recent years, you now have a range of choices, each with its own advantages and potential risks. Here is a brief summary of options available.
Implanon is progesterone only contraceptive. It is a small device, the size of a matchstick, which is implanted on the underside of your upper arm. The insertion and removal must be done by a doctor. Implanon works for three years to prevent pregnancy. After that time, you have the implant removed and a new one inserted, or switch to another form of birth control.
There are several types of oral contraceptives. For instance, Seasonale is an extended-cycle contraception. This allows you to have only four menstrual cycles per year. It is essentially the same as other pills but is taken in a three-month course instead of a course for each month.
The contraceptive patch is a convenient form of birth control. The patch is applied to a discrete area of the skin once a week for three weeks, and then not worn for one week to allow for your menstrual cycle. You only have to remember it once per week.
The birth control injection prevents pregnancy for three months. This type of contraception is administered in your physician's office.
All hormonal birth control also helps manage menses-related symptoms such as pain and heavy or irregular bleeding. The form of hormonal contraception we recommend is tailored to your menstrual symptoms in addition to providing birth control.
The vaginal ring is a small flexible ring that you insert into the vagina. The ring stays in place and releases a low dose of hormone for three weeks. Then you remove the ring for one week to allow for your period.
The Mirena intrauterine device is inserted into the uterus by your doctor during a short office visit. It can be left in place for up to five years.
